The Research Council of Norway has an annual budget of more than NOK 5 billion and plays a central role in Norwegian research. The mandate of the council is to promote and support basic and applied research in all areasof sience, technology, medicine and the humanities. Strong links between marine research and environmental as well as technological research is important to fully understand the complexity of the marine areas and the different pressures on the ecosystem, resulting from offshore activity, transport as well as long distance pollution. In maritime and offshore research the research programmes PETROMAKS and MAROFF are central. PETROMAKS A large R&D program in The Research Council of Norway With the introduction of PETROMAKS in 2004, the Norwegian government gave a signal that strong public support of petroleum R&D was necessary. PETROMAKS will assist in implementation of the strategies and plans laid down by the government strategy initiative OG 21(Oil and Gas in the 21st century). www.og21.org
The overall objective of PETROMAKS is to enhance the next 50 years of oil-related activity and secure gas production in a 100-year perspective. It is crucial that the Norwegian petroleum industry be further developed as an internationally competitive industry; this will ensure that the sector continues to play a key role in the sustainable growth and financing of the Norwegian welfare society and promote sound management of Norway's natural resources. Thematic areas for research and innovation in PETROMAKS are in harmony with the OG 21's targeted thematic technology areas:
