of more than NOK 5 billion and plays a central role in
Norwegian research. The mandate of the council is to
promote and support basic and applied research in all
areasof sience, technology, medicine and the humanities.

Strong links between marine research and environmental
as well as technological research is important to fully
understand the complexity of the marine areas and the
different pressures on the ecosystem, resulting from
offshore activity, transport as well as long distance
pollution. In maritime and offshore research the research
programmes PETROMAKS and MAROFF are central.

Maritim virksomhet og offshore operasjoner

MAROFF skal bidra tilå realisere regjeringens sating på
maritim utvikling (MARUT) for å fremme innovasjon og
verdiskaping i de maritime næringer.

Gjennomføringen av programmet blir koordinert mot
Innovasjon Norges satsing på maritim sektor. Programmet
skal bidra til at maritime bedrifter og forskningsmiljøer
videreutvikler sine kunnskapsmessige fortrinn, og støtter
prosjekter som er innrettet mot de forskningsutfordringer
som er nødvendige for å realisere MARUT.

Målgruppene for MAROFF er rederinæringen, verftsindustrien
og utstyrsleverandører til alle typer skip og havbruksanlegg. Photo Kongsberg Maritime

MAROFF støtter også kompetanseoppbygging i forskningsmiljøer
på teknologiske og samfunnsvitenskaplige tema avbetydning
for den maritime virksomhet i Norge.

PETROMAKS A large R&D program in The Research Council of Norway

With the introduction of PETROMAKS in 2004, the Norwegian
government gave a signal that strong public  support of
petroleum R&D was necessary. PETROMAKS will assist in
implementation of the strategies and plans laid down by the
government strategy initiative OG 21(Oil and Gas in the 21st

The overall objective of PETROMAKS is to enhance the next
50 years of oil-related activity and secure gas production in a
100-year perspective. It is crucial that the Norwegian petroleum
industry be further developed as an internationally competitive
industry; this will ensure that the sector continues to play a key
role in the sustainable growth and financing of the Norwegian
welfare society and promote sound management of Norway's
natural resources.
